![]() ![]() Some of my neck knives have been too hard-edged or bulky in the sheath (Though rarely), but the biggest problem is most of them had poor locking systems which would allow the knife to slip out. That used to be one of the sacrifices we made to minimize the size and profile of our compact knives. Any hard cutting using the standard skeleton handle found on many neck knives could be hazardous for your fingers, with no protection from slipping onto the blade. The handles on most neck knives are most useful for precision, scalpel-type work. You can cut through anything with this thing, using as much force as you want, and you will always have a good grip and there is no chance your finger will ever slip onto the blade. First is a safe, positive, comfortable, durable, non-slip grip. This Minimalist seems to answer the majority of those limitations. I've been using neck knives for decades, often as pocket knives instead of neck knives (because of poor sheath design usually), and there are certainly a number of limitations and disadvantages that are prevalent with them. I've been thinking of picking up a second one myself for quite a while. I think they like to showcase more designers, which is good in that this allowed us this Minimalist design in the first place, but bad if/when it goes away to make room for something else. It wouldn't surprise me though, as CRKT does often do just that. It has upgraded steel and micarta handles. The new SMKW Exclusive CRKT D2 Minimalist Bowie is a great easily carried EDC knife. This knife has an overall length of 5.13” and the carry weight of both the knife and the sheath is 2.1oz. The only tool you need to change it up is a Phillips head screwdriver. Not only does it have all the lashing points you could ever need, but it also has an easily adjustable mount clip making it fully ambidextrous and vertical or Scout carry compatible. It also has a black glass-reinforced nylon (GRN) sheath with multiple mounting options. However, it comes with a paracord lanyard which gives you an extra couple inches of finger room. This knife was designed for what is essentially a two-finger grip. The original version had green and black polished resin infused fiber handles. It has a 2.13” clip point blade with a blade thickness of 0.11” which makes it just about everything you would need to handle just about any daily chore. This new exclusive version from Smoky Mountain Knife Works takes that wildly popular knife and upgrades it with D2 steel with either a black coating or a stonewash finish. Designed by Alan Folts, the Minimalist line of small full-tang fixed blades are incredibly popular and frankly handy knives that can be discreetly carried numerous ways. What’s exciting about the SMKW exclusive CRKT D2 Minimalist Bowie? It has upgraded steel, micarta handles, and a budget friendly price point of only $30. ![]()
